Macadam stamps - Natasha Krenbol

"Once upon a time there was the postage stamp, a travelling image by nature. In a small room in Oakland, California, where I had been living for a short while, I began painting on stamps. The stamp became a canvas for dreams. Minimalist sketches, hieroglyphs, beautiful escapes. The wandering of the pen diverts the original engraving, the Chinese ink reveals the fables hidden in the effigy. I imagined the tiny images enlarged in a theatre or concert setting to the dimensions of a giant fresco. Repetition-variation, scales on a grid, improvisation on a framework, echoing jazz and Pygmy melodies."
